You can easily get there by bus from the city, and you arrive well-rested all the way to Gjendesheim Tourist Lodge with Besseggen as a neighbor.
From Gjendesheim, you can join those who start their day with a challenging hike over Besseggen. However, Gjendesheim is also a perfect starting point for many other diverse mountain hikes. You can also travel from here with Gjendebåten (the Gjende boat) over to Memurubu.
